La sección de agradecimientos es un pequeño espacio que se utiliza normalmente para receonocer contribuciones al artículo no suficientes como para ser autor, pero valiosas desde el punto de vista de los autores. Muchas de las becas y proyectos de investigación exigen que los trabajos que se publiquen bajo esa ayuda inclyan una mención expresa a la misma en la sección de agradecimientos.
Por último, dado que es un hueco muy libre, que no afecta las decisiones de los revisores en el proceso de revisión por pares, es un refugio del sentido del humor y socarronería de muchos investigadores. Algunos ejemplos (tomados de AQUÍ, donde hay varios más):
